The City Beyond Midtown
The most prominent and familiar destination outside of Midtown Harrisburg is the Capitol Building. As part of the Capitol Complex, the rotunda, Senate and House chambers have been beautifully restored to their original glory. Visitors are welcome to experience this magnificent piece of Harrisburg history with a guide or on their own.
Not far from the Capitol Building is the Walnut St walking bridge to City Island. Considered the "recreational center" of Harrisburg, City Island is home to the Pride of the Susquehanna Riverboat, the Harrisburg Senators baseball stadium, and many family oriented activities, such as miniature golf and swimming.
The Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts houses the Imax Theater with its six-story screen, Sunoco Performance Theater and an interactive Science Center. The Susquehanna Art Museum, along with numerous other independent galleries and shops, is also located in Harrisburg's center-city district.
Riverfront Park hosts several festivals throughout the year. The Independence weekend is celebrated with the American Music Fest. Labor Day brings the Kipona Celebration and its children's theater, concerts, ethnic cuisine and the Grand Finale Fireworks, the largest in Pennsylvania.
Reservoir Park, situated on the city's highest point, is Harrisburg's largest park. The National Civil War Museum, the concert series at the Levitt Performing Arts Pavilion Bandshell, the Caretaker's Mansion and Art Gallery and the Shakespeare Festival are all located here. Walking paths and landscaped gardens highlight the park.
North of Midtown are the Renaissance gardens, Japanese bridge and sculptures at Italian Lake. Fifteen minutes farther north is Wildwood Lake Sanctuary. Its 212 acre nature preserve is popular for bird watching and hiking.
There are many recreational opportunities on the Susquehanna. Explore the many river islands or observe the wildlife and bird habitats via canoe or kayak. Blue Mountain Outfitters, in Old Marysville, has equipment and guides available to help make your outdoor experience safe and exciting.
Fort Hunter Mansion, also on the Susquehanna, is a popular spot for picnics as well as weddings. Tours are available.
