Few cities can make the claims about its riverfront like Harrisburg can. Foremost among them is how easy it is to access the river and fully enjoy its calming beauty and recreational opportunities. Simply walk a few short blocks from any Midtown location and the riverfront is yours.

The tree-lined, grassy strip that hugs the river's bank offers a walking/jogging path complete with stretching/workout/aerobic stations along its route. And you're never really alone on the riverfront. Waiting for your pondering gaze are the numerous sculptures that surprise and amuse with their presence. The Fireman's Memorial Statue and the Sunken Gardens are also located here.

The Midtown Cinema is the region's only venue for independent, foreign, documentary and soon-to-be discovered films. Saved from the wrecking ball by concerned residents the Cinema's lounge is also a popular spot for coffee and desserts.

The corner of 3rd and Reily Streets is known as Harrisburg's "Book Row." The Midtown Scholar, Ted L. Canaday Old & Rare Books and Harrisburg Book Center are all located here. Whether you're looking for a first edition or a new release, the friendly vendors at "Book Row" can help you find it.

Let's not forget the Broad Street Market, the oldest continuously operated market in America. Housed in a two-building complex, independent vendors and local farmers sell fresh meats, produce and lunches; organic, international and gourmet foods and gifts.

And there's more...

The Broad Street Market and the Historic Harrisburg Resource Center anchor the emerging 3rd Street "Cultural Corridor". Across the street is Fissel & Co. Vintage and Antique Store and the Shining Light Thrift Shop. Continuing north on 3rd you'll find Albert Michael's Conservation and Third Street Used Furniture. The Sayford Market (3rd & Sayford) has groceries and snacks, and Vietnamese Garden and Cedars Lebanese Restaruant (both at 3rd & Reily) offer sit down ethnic cuisine.

Heading south from the Broad Street Market is Jupi's Art Gallery, Papine's Jamaican Food and Mercado's Pizza. And for all you locals Papine's offers free delivery! Tom's Grill and Bar on Reily St and The Midtown Tavern (2nd & Sassafras) are just two of the many midtown neighborhood establishments waiting to welcome you.

At the Northwest corner of midtown is the Pennsylvania Governor's Mansion. Home to the Commonwealth's highest ranking public servant, the Georgian style house sits on three acres overlooking the Susquehanna. The house is open to the public with tours of the interior furnishings and artwork.

The Pennsylvania National Fire Museum, at 4th and Muench Streets, houses impressively restored firefighting equipment from 1790's hand-pump carts to 20th-century fire engines. Also inside is a soul-stirring 9/11 exhibit honoring the tragic heroism of the FDNY.

Midtown is comprised of neighborhoods in a range of architectural styles. Many of the residential streets — in particular those crossing Hamilton between 2nd and 3rd Streets — create a cozy, early-19th Century atmosphere with their narrow girth, brick & stone house fronts and brightly colored doors. In fact, significant parts of Midtown are nationally-registered historic neighborhoods.
