62 Artists Do Lunch a Success for Midtown
HARRISBURG - Jim Woland, Event Co-Chair for Friends of Midtown, a not-for-profit community-building organization in Midtown Harrisburg, today declared the organization’s recent fundraising effort, 62 Artists Do Lunch, an official success.
The event, which ran from Friday evening, March 31st through Sunday, April 2nd, kicked off with an opening reception that brought over 350 people through the doors of the Tracey Mansion (1829 N. Front Street). Harrisburg Mayor Stephen R. Reed took time to enjoy both the lunchboxes and artwork displayed throughout the exhibit space, and was kind enough to present Friends of Midtown with a proclamation declaring March 31, 2006 62 Artists Do Lunch Project Day.
Throughout Saturday and Sunday, a steady stream of visitors came through the exhibit, with Sunday evening's auction of unsold lunchboxes bringing the event to an exciting close. All told, Do Lunch raised $4,440 for Midtown's Salvation Army branch and for Harris Street Ministries' Loaves of Love – both food outreach programs available to area residents in need. Additionally, $2,000 worth of artwork was sold on behalf of local artists exhibiting at the event.

Many at the Friday night reception expressed enthusiasm over the event’s pairing of art and fund-raising. "Living in Harrisburg, I am always excited to discover local arts events right here in the city, and this [62 Artists Do Lunch] is even better since the funds are going for a good cause!" said contributing artist Jonathan Smith.
In addition to Mayor Reed, Friends of Midtown extends special thanks to City Councilwoman Gloria Martin-Roberts, who supported and helped fund Do Lunch from the beginning; Tim Fulton of Susquehanna Real Estate, who generously donated the Tracey Mansion exhibit space; the Gadjo Playboys; Mangia Qui and Alvaro’s Bakery and Pastry Shop; and the hundreds of attendees who immeasurably contributed to the community-building and financial success of the exhibit. The number of enthusiastic supporters and the donations raised for the food outreach programs stand as testament to the creativity and generosity of the Harrisburg community.
Some lunchboxes are still available for sale, of which all proceeds will go to the Midtown Salvation Army branch, and Harris Street Ministries’ Loaves of Love.
