Side Street Cinema for Summer 2006

HARRISBURG – Friends of Midtown is proud to announce that "Side Street Cinema", a summer-long outdoor movie event, will take place in Midtown Harrisburg from June to September.
"We will be screening movies, outdoors, on seven Saturday nights throughout the summer," said FOM President Dave Robertson, "and as with Side Door Cinema of summers past, moviegoers should feel free to partake in our BYOC policy – bring your own chair." Hot dogs, soda and other such refreshments will be available for purchase, courtesy of Nonna's Deli-sioso of the Broad Street Market.
All screenings will begin at dusk (or 9 p.m.), rain or shine, and will include the following films:
- Hairspray (June 10th)
- Rebel Without a Cause (June 24th)
- Cleopatra Jones and the Casino of Gold (July 8)
- Attack of the Kung Fu Girls (July 22)
- Yellow Submarine (August 5)
- Sixteen Candles (August 19)
- Nosferatu (September 2)
"Jason Smith, of Fathom Design Group, approached us with the idea of bringing Side Door Cinema to a location in Midtown," said FOM Events Chair Jim Woland. "Obviously, we were delighted at the prospect of continuing this summer tradition here in this neighborhood."
After considering several locations, the Salvation Army kindly offered Friends of Midtown permission to use a portion of their property. "Representatives of the Salvation Army were nearly as excited as we were, and generously offered their parking lot at the corner of Green and Cumberland Streets. With the increase in parking and event space that comes with the move to Midtown, we hope to see an even greater turnout of movie-lovers throughout the summer."
Side Door Cinema was originally conceived by Smith with the goal of entertaining the community and raising funds in support of arts and cultural organizations of Central Pennsylvania. He joined forces with Caleb Smith of Moviate! to aid in the scheduling, procurement and screening of films. Over its first three seasons, Side Door Cinema raised thousands of dollars for arts-related charities in the Harrisburg region. Proceeds from this year's screenings will go to support Moviate! (which aids and promotes independent films) and Friends of Midtown, both non-profit organizations of Harrisburg. Side Street Cinema is sponsored by Fulton Bank, Fathom Design Group and the Midtown Scholar Bookstore.
